Sustainability & Business

Many among us understand sustainability in businesses as eco-friendly and green work practices or philanthropic actions for the community. However, there is more to it.

Sustainability and social responsibility for corporations is a concept that takes into account all individuals and groups that are impacted by the business activity. These stakeholders who are directly affected by a company’s operation include employees, customers and suppliers. Other stakeholders include communities, the government and NGOs.

Firms carrying out Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities take into account the concerns of these stakeholders in their business strategy and operations. Some examples of sustainable business practices are:

  • Anti-discrimination policies, such as hiring of disabled or elderly workers, and paying equitable wages to male and female workers.
  • Work-life balance programmes for helping employees adopt healthy habits.
  • Environmentally safe practices such as using recycling facilities and environmentally friendly material and office supplies.
  • Switching to energy- and water-efficient appliances and offices.
  • Using the company’s expertise and staff for community involvement, such as educating the public and raising awareness of particular issues or providing help in technical areas.

and the list goes on…

Yes, businesses can be both profitable and sustainable. Firms with long term planning and a conscience for society have succeeded in engaging in sustainable practices that are both beneficial to themselves, their employees, the communities around them, the environment and other stakeholders.

Our School Programme has been specially designed to bring understanding on how businesses can achieve CSR actions and how youths, as consumers and future employees, can influence them and together lead to a sustainable economy.
